2. Where the time actually goes
Coverage rate is the number people compare, and it is the least useful one. A spray gun can lay down a wall far faster than a roller, but the masking, floor protection, equipment setup, gun cleaning and overspray cleanup all belong in the same total. On a single room, that overhead usually exceeds the time saved.
The crossover point is roughly where the area is large enough, or repetitive enough, that setup amortises. Whole-house repaints, furniture production runs and large commercial areas favour spray. One accent wall does not.

Spray produces the smoothest achievable film because nothing touches the surface after the coating lands. That advantage disappears immediately if atomisation is poor, the coating is wrongly reduced or the gun is moved inconsistently.
A roller leaves a texture set by the nap depth. Short nap on smooth plaster is close to flat; long nap on render is visibly textured, which is usually what the surface needs. A brush leaves marks that level out on matt finishes and stay visible on gloss — which is why brushwork on gloss trim rewards a good brush and a slower coating.
