Wool Pad vs Foam Pad: Which Polishing Pad Should You Use?

Wool cuts faster and runs cooler than most people expect. Foam finishes cleaner but removes less. Most correction work needs both, in sequence, and the mistake that costs panels is choosing by pad rather than by defect depth.

2. Cut rate and heat behave differently

Wool cuts through the open ends of its fibres. That structure both removes material quickly and lets heat escape, which is why sustained rotary work on heavily oxidised paint is usually a wool job. The trade-off is the finish: wool commonly leaves haze or holograms that a second stage has to remove.

Foam works through its cell structure carrying the abrasive. Density sets the behaviour — a firm closed-cell pad cuts noticeably, an open-cell soft pad barely cuts at all and mostly refines. Foam holds more heat than wool, so on a rotary machine it is easier to build temperature in one spot than most operators expect.

Change one variable at a time. If a combination under-corrects, step up the pad or the compound — not both together. Changing both at once removes your ability to tell which one did the work, and makes it easy to overshoot.

4. Machine pairing changes the outcome

A rotary machine drives the pad in one direction under load, which is what makes wool effective and what makes holograms possible. A dual-action machine oscillates as it rotates, which reduces cut and makes a clean finish easier to reach, but will not replicate rotary correction on heavy defects.

In practice many workshops correct on rotary with wool, then refine on dual-action with foam. Studios working on softer or thinner paint often stay on dual-action throughout and accept slower correction in exchange for a lower risk of burn-through.

5. Pad condition matters more than pad choice

  1. Clean the pad frequently during work; a loaded pad cuts unpredictably and can mar the surface.

  3. Inspect wool for matting and foam for tearing or glazing before each session.
  4. Let pads dry fully before storage; damp wool degrades and reshapes.
  5. Replace pads when the working face no longer recovers after cleaning.
  6. Wipe residue and inspect under directional light before deciding whether another stage is needed.
